At your doorstep
Bajo Café - a hipster place, boho style, good for espresso and other drinks, with some vegan options, and a nice spot for remote work.
Roots - A new offering on your block, with super yummy food inspired from Jalisco (think mole, torta ahogada) - vegetarian and vegan options.
Loncheria Doña Mary - a traditional local restaurant - try the Caldo de Pollo, or Caldo de Pollo Especial if you like liver and gizzards, or the 30 pesos tamales.
Gourmet Park - An ever changing selection of world foods with a great vibe - Korean, Japanese, Fried Chicken, Kebab, Burgers and a full bar at the time of this writing! Expat nights on Thursdays with DJ.
El Fogon del May - famous among expats and visitors alike, the new location just reopened and is a lot cooler - tacos (sirloin and al pastor), sandwiches and other traditional combinations, and beer!
Birria de la 30 - This is the place for beef Birria - in soup form, in tacos (dorados are the best) or quesa-birria (with cheese)!
Taco Trucks - Super Aki - these trucks don’t look like much, but you have to try the tacos de cabeza there (steamed cow head meat) - try others and let us know!
Carnitas el Gordo - only open on Saturday and Sunday, from about 10am until the carnitas run out - eat under a tarp at a picnic table street side or take away: you can pick if you want it maciza (loin?) or surtida (mixed meats).
Cafe Choux-Choux - Cute little café by the park, coffee, pastries, digital nomads.
Pozoleria Mi Abuelita - It’s a pozoleria, but we like their pansita or menudo better here - and we usually go on the other side of the highway for our pozole fix, when we don’t cook it ourselves.
Papa Charly’s - Italian inspired, good pasta and grilled octopus, variety of breakfast and brunch, and an ice cream parlor attached to it.
Miga Playa - Argentinian bakery and coffee shop - that’s where you go for your pastry cravings and empanadas.
Fuego Santo - Argentinian and Mexican cuisine. May not be the best Argentinian grill in town, but it is easy to get to! And they have a good deal on a massive milanesa (beef or chicken)
Chiltepin - Very popular seafood place - plan for a bit of wait for dinner on busy nights. Excellent soups and grilled octopus.
A longer walk
Taqueria Gomez - this is where you find the best tacos in my opinion outside of the expat and visitor “norms” - tacos de tripas, de lengua, de suadero… Worth a try if you’re into that kind of things!
La Brocherie - a French-owned roasted chicken restaurant with amazing desserts - but the best is a “moules-frites” dinner (mussels and fries), available Tuesdays only, and only with reservation - try it, you won’t regret it!
Trattoria del Centro - that’s our go-to Italian place, for the atmosphere, the service, wood fired pizzas and fresh pastas, at a reasonable price.
Mariskinky - Now larger and louder than before, you can get all kinds of seafood and drinks in a party atmosphere - space feels a bit tight with their new table setup.
Ah Cacao - they have 4 locations on 5th Avenue - we like this one the best (mostly because it is the closest!) for coffee and chocolate-based pastries.
Tropical Tacos - In the -still- cool, hipster end of 5th Avenue, this place has elaborate, unusual seafood tacos that won’t break the bank.
Club de la Cerveza - one of the few places we still go to on 5th Avenue: they have large choice of beers, bottles and tap, and you can relax and people watch. I didn’t enjoy the food I tried though.
La Cueva del Chango - (the monkey’s cave) - busy, popular, good brunch place - excellent choices of chilaquiles and fresh squeezed juices.
Camaron Clandestino - Sinaloa style seafood, fresh oysters available, and you need to try the shrimp tacos with cheese…
Panificacion Castillo - if you’re craving Mexican pastries and pan dulce, then this is the place!
A short drive
Pizzas Don Goyo - Discovered completely by accident, they have a wood-fired oven and have a wide choice of toppings - and if this is too far of a trip for you, they also deliver in Playa!
